The gloom of impending darkness eventually made it too difficult for the spotted pony to maneuver around rocks and scattered deadfalls. Defeated, Running Wolf relented and reined the tired animal back toward the village.

He hoped that the others had produced better results. They had covered a lot of ground in the morning hours, regrouped for a brief lunch, and then scattered even farther from the village for the afternoon’s search. So far, there was no trace of the girl.

With his mouth pulled downward in a perpetual scowl, he entered the village in search of the other riders. When he located the group, he saw with dismay that Jenna was not among them.

“Running Wolf!” Brown Otter called. “No sign of her?”

“No.” He cursed under his breath.

“Here comes Elk Walker. Maybe he has some news.”

The brave trotted up to the group. “Anyone find her?” Running Wolf shook his head angrily. Elk Walker held up a cloth object to show the group. “This may be something, then. Do you recognize it Running Wolf?”

The brave reined his mount closer, taking the object from Elk Walker. It was a small rawhide pouch, simply sewn, with a drawstring closure. It looked like something Jenna might have fashioned. He opened it and peered inside. Several handfuls of corn kernels. She had taken the gelding with her.…

“Where did you find this?”

“An hour’s ride down the South Trail. There were tracks made recently, and the animal was moving at a fast pace.”

His stomach churned. “How could she think she could make this work,” he murmured.

“Make what work?” Brown Otter urged.

“She is heading for the Dutch fort.”

“That is over two weeks of hard riding! And she is alone!” Elk Walker shook his head in amazement. “She is either crazy… or much smarter than we think.”

“There is nothing smart about this venture!” Running Wolf barked at his friend.

“That I know, my friend,” Elk Walker replied, sobering at the thought of Jenna riding at night along the South Trail. “There are many dangers for a woman alone in these mountains. Does she detest Strikes-With-Two-Fists so much? There must be more to this matter.”

“I wish not to speak of it,” Running Wolf muttered, looking away from his friend’s probing stare. “I will go now to council with our chief on this matter.”

He found the old sachem in meditation along Sononjoh, nearly hidden by the tall, yellowed grass along the bank. Running Wolf joined him quietly, masking his mounting agitation carefully. Truly, Jenna was not prepared for the danger she might find herself in on such a hard journey. The mountains were brutal, and gave no quarter for innocence or femininity.

“Hello my son. You bring me news of Jenna?”

“Yes. She has taken a horse and run from us,” Running Wolf admitted, ashamed.

“South?”

“Yes.”

“And you will go after her?”

Running Wolf blinked. “I... yes of course, father. It is my duty.”

Soaring Eagle turned a looked deeply at his son. His eyes were kind. “My son. Perhaps it is simply time to let her go. It may be that I was wrong in my decision to place her with you.
